Sometimes it's better to do something else for a while and Sparks did just that after 'Interior Design', concentrating on film-making and attempting to develop a move based on the Japanese Manga series Mai The Psychic Girl. They returned to music in 1993 and released their sixteenth LP 'Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins' in November 1994. While they were away. techno had happened and the brothers embraced it wholeheartedly while also bringing back some of the playful lunacy that had been their hallmark in the 70s. What came out was once again something identifiably Sparks and also completely contemporary. The singles 'When Do I Get To Sing "My Way"' and "When I Kiss You (I Hear Charlie Parker Playing)' both charted in the UK and Germany and were dance chart hits in the US again. More than the previous two LPs, it has the same feel of Pet Shop Boys records of the time, if the subject matter is more wide screen than PSB's minutiae of life. The 2019 expanded reissue included remixes from UK artists such as The Grid, Bernard Butler and Vince Clarke, paying back the influences of their youth with new interpretations of their songs.
