Day 22: The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman

'The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman', released on August 14th 2009, was a complete departure for the band, in that it was a musical for radio, commissioned by Sveriges Radio Radioteatern. It was conceived as a single piece, rather than a collection of songs. The play was first broadcast in Sweden on the day of the LP's release, and premiered in the UK on BBC 6 Music on October 28th 2009. As a radio play, it's beautifully realised, with the sound design and orchestration handled by the brothers. Musically, it is a continuation of Sparks' recent records, with a lot of musical and lyrical repetition, adventurous sampled orchestral arrangements and excursions into other aspects of Sparks's sound over the years. It's the sounds of a band who aren't afraid to put things together in unexpected ways. The story, of Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman finding himself transported to Hollywood in the mid-50s to make big budget films, only to try and escape from his situation, becoming like 'an actor in a big budget Hollywood film' himself, is perfectly portrayed in audio. The Mael brothers' ambition to write for the movies was finally achieved in a typically Sparks' way, creating images with words and music.
