Sparks most recent LP 'The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte' was released in May 2023, saw them sign with Island Records again, where they had been signed in the 1970s. The titular first single from had it a video featuring Cate Blanchett dancing in headphones and a yellow suit, which she recreated at Glastonbury, an appearance that somehow redefined the band. Musically, the LP is also different again, a mix of everything that has gone before, but with added cinematic sparkle. It's unavoidable to say that a band whose main members are in their 70s have made another record that manages to be both contemporary and timeless. Returning to Island, where they had their first hits, could have been something to do with it, or perhaps they're on a roll. There is a thread of sadness and how it affects people through the LP, from "So many people are crying their latte" to the final track, "Gee, That Was Fun", which seems like a modern "My Way", perhaps understandable at a time when contemporaries are sometimes no longer around. For all that, it's still lyrically neat and witty and musically adventurous and one can only hope they can keep on doing that.
