'Introducing Sparks' was released in 1977. It was recorded by the Mael brothers with another different band line-up and another take on their sound. The AOR rock sound of 'Big Beat' gave way to a lighter, smoother sound with backing harmonies and a broader, more piano driven musical palette. It didn't chart in the UK or US and wasn't released on CD until 2007. Sonically it's a considerable departure from their previous records and as such could be seen as something of a disappointment. However, it still includes moments of lyrical cleverness and previously unseen influences such as Greek music, chamber strings, 12 bar blues and The Beach Boys. It's different rather than disappointing, and introduced 'Forever Young', a song which has become an anthem for the band.
